While hard water may have its benefits, most homeowners in Poole and Bournemouth find it a menace and rightly so. Which is why we usually suggest to our customers that we install a water softener when servicing or installing their boiler.
Hard water shortens the lifespan of appliances such as kettles, washing machines and dishwashers due to limescale buildup. It also affects the health of our hair and skin as the limescale clogs skin pores and leaves hair feeling sticky. The water pressure of your house could also be compromised from the buildup of limescale in the plumbing system and your bills might start piling up from inefficient boilers or heating systems.
HOW WATER SOFTENERS CAN HELP
Hard Water is high in minerals such as Calcium and Magnesium. A water softener works by removing these minerals with the help of some chemistry.
Water starts by flowing into a mineral tank where it is met by resin beads that are positively charged with Sodium Ions. Calcium and Magnesium are negatively charged therefore attach to the positive ions as water passes through the resin beads. The end product is soft water.
Water softeners have three components:
- Mineral tank – The mineral tank holds the resin beans and is where the bulk of the work takes place. Water flows into an inlet, through the resin beans then out to the rest of your home.
- Control Valve – This component plays a crucial role in tracking the amount of water going through the tank. The capacity of the resin beans can diminish as the sodium ions get used up. The control valve automatically starts a regeneration cycle to restore the positive charge in the resin beads. The control valve therefore boosts efficiency.
- Brine Tank – This is a shorter tank next to the mineral tank and it facilitates the regeneration process. The tank contains a concentrated salt solution that replenishes the positive charge in the mineral tank. The salt is added manually in form of blocks or pellets and the solution flows through the resin beads once triggered by the control valve. The regeneration process could vary in different water softeners but it essentially involves charging the resin beans positively and clearing the attached Calcium and Magnesium minerals.
Boilers and heating systems work harder than necessary when covered up in limescale. A water softener reduces the energy costs that accumulate from limescale damage.
