How a Water Softener Works
A water softener removes hardness minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, from the mains supply before they enter your home’s pipework. These minerals are the cause of limescale, which can reduce the efficiency of heating systems and damage appliances.
The process works through ion exchange technology. Hard water passes through a resin bed inside the softener, where calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium ions. The result is softened water that flows into your home, protecting your plumbing and appliances.
To keep working effectively, the resin bed is periodically cleaned through a process called regeneration. During this cycle, a brine solution made from specialist salt flushes the resin, removing the collected minerals and preparing the system to continue softening the water.
The only regular maintenance required is topping up the salt. With this simple step, the system provides a continuous supply of softened water, improving efficiency, reducing scale, and extending the life of household appliances.
